5 Ways Lantern Supports FFN Caregivers with a Text

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with Katie Richardson, CEO of Lantern, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and families. Lantern’s mission is clear and powerful:

“We believe that every child and family deserves the opportunity to thrive, and we work tirelessly to make this vision a reality. By sharing expert-curated tips, activities, and essential, trusted information, we empower families to support their children’s healthy development.”

One of Lantern’s most impactful tools was designed specifically for Family, Friend, and Neighbor (FFN) caregivers: the FFN Text Channel. Developed with funding from the Early Milestones Impact on Equity Initiative and in partnership with Mile High United Way, this channel was built with direct input from FFN caregivers themselves.

What is an FFN caregiver?

Your family, friend, and neighbors that provide child care for children. They are essential to the early childhood ecosystem, yet they frequently lack access to pay, licensing, and professional development. Lantern is stepping in to support these caregivers.

Here are 5 ways Lantern’s FFN channel is making a difference:

1. Inclusive and Accessible Communication 🌍

The FFN channel is open to all caregivers, with a special focus on FFN caregivers—whether unlicensed, licensed, or license-exempt. To maximize accessibility, messages are available in English, Spanish, and Arabic, helping caregivers from diverse backgrounds stay informed and connected.

2. Community-Centered Content 🤝

Lantern collaborated with a group of 10 FFN caregivers — FFN Lived Expertise Group — who dedicated over 90 hours to co-develop general educational messages. This vital input shaped the resources, topics, and outreach materials, while also building a multilingual, peer-informed foundation.

3. Localized Opportunities 📍

In addition to general messages, Lantern shares region-specific resources based on caregivers’ zip codes or counties. These include professional development events, food access programs, and other local supports—making sure caregivers receive information that’s truly relevant to their communities.

4. Focus on Equity 📊

Initial survey data shared by Katie revealed that among 450 enrolled FFNs:

  • 59% provide care without pay
  • 79% are unlicensed
  • 48% report household incomes under $50,000/year

These statistics highlight the importance of reaching caregivers who often have limited access to formal resources. Lantern’s channel helps bridge that gap by offering timely, trusted information and opportunities.

5. Empowerment Through Information 💡

The channel promotes awareness of professional development, financial supports, child-friendly activities, and nutrition education. Lantern also helps FFNs connect to free tax support and learn about the Colorado Caregiver Tax Credit. By equipping FFN caregivers with knowledge and resources, Lantern empowers them to better support the children in their care.
