#WhatsUpWednesday with Maryellen from School Health on hearing and vision screenings

Today we are joined by Maryellen O'Keefe-Smith from School Heath to talk about the importance of hearing and vision screenings, particularly in an early childhood setting.

Maryellen O’Keefe-Smith is the Vision, Hearing, and Electronic Health Records (EHR) Senior Specialist at School Health. She is responsible for understanding how schools perform screening tests, the recommendations and guidelines each state requires, and how to operate the vision and hearing devices. She is also responsible for understanding how school nurses document student health records and works as a liaison with our partners to improve student health outcomes, save school nurses time, and reduce district liability. Maryellen’s career spans over 20 years with experience among healthcare professionals. In Maryellen’s time at School Health since 2015, she has become an expert in the use of the Spot Vision Screener, Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs), Audiometers, Tympanometers, Otoscopes, and Ophthalmoscopes, along with the role these tools have in Early Head Start and Head Start programs, requirements for schools across the nation, and the operation of various vision and hearing service organizations. She has presented and trained individuals to use School Health products at numerous exhibitions, expos, and schools that have requested assistance.

School Health is a national, full-service provider of health supplies and services to professionals in educational settings from pre-school to college. For over 60 years, they have been advocates for the health and safety of students, staff, and their communities.
