5 Fourth of July Activities for Children

Finding fun and safe activities for young children on the Fourth of July can be a challenge—but it’s also a great opportunity to help them learn, play, and celebrate! Whether you're planning a backyard BBQ or a quiet day at home, here are five toddler-safe activities that combine fun, learning, and a splash of red, white, and blue.

1. Handprint Flag Art

If your fridge is a gallery of tiny handprint crafts, this one’s a must! It’s a simple and sweet way to mark the holiday and add a masterpiece to proudly display.

Materials: White paper; red and blue non-toxic, VOC-free paint

Instructions: Paint your child’s palm blue and their fingers red. Gently press their hand onto the paper to create a handprint flag. Let it dry and add sticker stars or write the date to remember the moment.

2. Puffy Paint Fireworks

This sensory-friendly craft is as fun to make as it is to look at! The puffy texture adds a 3D effect that toddlers will love.

Materials: Shaving cream, white glue, food coloring, paper, paintbrushes or fingers

Instructions: Mix equal parts shaving cream and white glue in a bowl. Add a few drops of red or blue food coloring and stir. Let your child use a brush or their fingers to create firework shapes on paper. Allow to dry for a fluffy effect.

3. Sparkler-Free Fireworks in a Jar

This safe and mesmerizing activity mimics fireworks without the noise or danger—perfect for toddlers who might be sensitive to sound.

Materials: Clear glass jar, warm water, vegetable oil, food coloring, fork

Instructions: Fill the jar about ¾ full with warm water. In a separate bowl, mix a few tablespoons of oil with drops of food coloring. Stir gently with a fork, then pour the mixture into the jar. Watch as the colors slowly burst and swirl like fireworks!

4. Firework Stampers

Turn a simple toilet paper roll into a fun firework stamper for a colorful painting session.

Materials: Empty toilet paper roll, scissors, paint, paper plate, paper

Instructions: Cut slits into one end of the roll and fan them out to create a fringe. Dip the fringed end into red, white, or blue paint and stamp onto paper to make firework bursts. Repeat with different colors for a layered effect.

5. Frozen Paint Fireworks

Cool down with this creative painting activity that’s perfect for a hot July day.

Materials: Ice cube tray, water, food coloring, craft sticks, paper

Instructions: Fill each section of the tray with water and add a few drops of food coloring. Insert a craft stick into each section and freeze. Once frozen, let your child use the colorful ice cubes to paint on paper as they melt—creating beautiful, abstract fireworks.

If your child is anything like mine—still in that delightful phase of putting everything in their mouth and giggling when you say “no”—you’ll want to stay close and supervise each activity.

Working in child care? These crafts are also perfect for the classroom! They’re simple to prep and make wonderful take-home treasures that parents will absolutely love.

Happy toddler crafting!
